Take a Stand Against Elder Abuse & Neglect

As many as 1 in 10 nursing-home residents experience abuse or neglect in a given year — and most of it is never reported. Nationally, researchers estimate only about 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse ever reaches the authorities.

Nursing home residents depend on staff for eating, bathing, dressing, taking medication, and preventing bed sores. When a facility fails to meet those basic obligations, it can be held accountable under Alabama's laws governing negligence and wantonness.

Common Types of Nursing Home Abuse

  • Physical abuse: unreasonable restraint, hitting, shoving
  • Emotional abuse: ridicule, manipulation, coercion, isolation
  • Financial abuse: unauthorized withdrawals or transfers, theft
  • Sexual abuse: any forced or non-consensual sexual contact
  • Neglect: failing to provide basic necessities or attention

Recognizing the Warning Signs

If you suspect a family member has been abused or neglected in a nursing home, address it immediately. Watch for sudden weight loss or malnourishment, unexplained bruises or fractures, noticeable changes in behavior, untreated bed sores, soiled clothing or bedding, and unexplained changes in their finances — including withdrawals, transfers, or missing funds.

If any of this sounds familiar, your next call should be to our office.
